Armando was born in Iringa, Tanganika, British East Africa, later shifted to Arusha where he did his primary class studies.
He came to Panjim, Goa when he was about 6 years old and resumed school at Don Bosco School. In the 1970's, during school days he liked making & flying model rockets with home made propellant. KTC bus stand, Panjim's foundation stone served as the launch pad. He made and flew unpowered gliders and balsa airplanes with twisted rubber band powered propellor. Learnt to make low power transmitters and radios. [Made tiny radios built into 555 cigeratte packets, to hear music in school during class] . He also built audio equipment like Speakers, Amplifiers with home made etched PCBs. While still in school, he did the concealed electric wiring and fittings of his new home, including piping in the concrete beams, columns and terrace all by himself. Was called Mad Scientist by his peers in school. Dhempe College science students in his batch remember Armando doing experiments in the Chemical Lab, once filling it rapidly with dense smoke during practicals.
Armando started Soft cell Computer Training in 1981 teaching initially Programming with BASIC and Logo for young students. Had special Computer courses My First Byte and Understanding Electronics for young students. Classes were held at Panjim/ Margao and later at Mapusa. Owned Sinclair ZX81, BBC Micro, Apple II, IBM PC during this early period. These were the first Personal Computers in Goa...Then of course later IBM PC XT, AT, 286, 386, 486, Pentium I, II.... Taught Microsoft Basic [CP/M versions with Z80 soft card], WordStar, Lotus 123, [the predecessors of MS Word and MS Excel], dBase III, Programming with C, Visual Basic, and of course MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint later. He also taught 3D Computer Graphics and multimedia with Photoshop, Premiere, CorelDraw and AutoCAD, 3D Max etc using professional quality frame buffers like DPS PAR with dedicated hard disks and Turtle Beach Professional Sound cards.
He also taught Assembly Language for 6502 and Z80 CPUs for electronic and engineering students. Interestingly he learnt all this by himself without attending any courses. He had aquired an extensive collections of books, many hard to find in India. Books by Rodney Zaks, Adam Osborne, Microsoft Press etc and Electronic magazines like Elektor and BYTE, UK and US editions..In 2001, Dr. Allan Rocha, Professor /Goa State Coordinator, Technical Teachers Training Institute, Porvorim invited Armando to teach Computer usage to Govt employees [from various depts like Electricity, GMC, PWD etc] for about a year.
In 2003, Armando took up Financial Consultancy and Medical insurance full time, leaving Computer education after 20 years. During the dark Covid period, he got the time and opportunity to get interested in Electronics / Computer programming once again. Armando had been frequently requested to teach Computers/ Programming by his past students/ friends and neighbours. He will resume teaching during summer vacations during May 2025 onwards at Patto Plaza Panjim.
